PHOTO BY STUART BECKWITH The Lady Badger golf team started the spring season with a second-place finish last weekend at the State Preview Tournament at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin. The Lady Badgers shot 370 on day one, followed by 355 on day two while playing in the rain with wind chills below freezing temperatures.

“I can tell you those were two very tough days to play golf,” coach Stuart Beckwith said. “Those girls showed that they are mentally ready to make a run at the state title. Our day two team total was within nine strokes of [Class 3A two-time defending state champion] Andrews. I think this is going to be a fun year for Lady Badger golf.”

Senior Carmen Gonzales was the team leader, as she tied for fourth place overall with a two-day total of 174.

The Lady Badgers will travel to San Antonio this weekend for their next tournament.

“Overall, it was a great start,” Beckwith said. “We have to get better every week. I am proud of the kids. They played pretty well in the tough conditions. A secondplace finish in that field of teams is a good start.”
