Shelter dog thriving after surgery, care

Treatment made possible through donations

Buster Buster Friends of LampasasAnimal Shelter responded to a recent request from Lampasas Animal Shelter staff to come to the aid of Buster, a 6-monthold heeler-mix that was brought to the shelter in bad condition.

Buster had been in pain all of his life with a bad front leg, according to Mary Black Davis, chairman of FLAS.

When the staff at the shelter took Buster to the vet, they were informed the puppy's front leg would have to be removed to provide him any quality of life or for him to survive, because his leg had dragged on the ground and was raw and infected.

"The leg had to come off," said Mrs. Davis. "When we were contacted for help, we were assured that he would be adopted after his recovery, and he would have the best of care if only he could have this surgery."

Mrs. Davis said Buster's owners attempted to reclaim the puppy from the shelter the day before his surgery, but since Buster had not had previous medical care, their request was denied.

Friends Lampasas Animal Shelter board members voted to go forward with the surgery. "I am happy to report that the surgery was done, and Buster is doing very well in his foster home," said Mrs. Black.

Today, she said, Buster is running around, eating well and full of energy, and the veterinarian expects a complete recovery.

"Your money, influence and presence in the community made this possible. It was an expensive surgery, but thankfully through the generous donations we have received, we have paid the full bill," Mrs. Davis said.

"Thank you all so very much. Buster will soon be on his way to a new life, with new family members."

To make a contribution to help the animals at the shelter, send donations to Mrs. Davis at 1301 W. North Ave., or phone 556-3118 for information.
