Barbara Lucinda (Beem) Still died Aug. 26, 2010, from complications of multiple systems atrophy.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at School Creek Baptist Church.

She was born Dec. 11, 1948 in Battle Creek, Mich., the second child of Barbara and Richard Beem.

Mrs. Still earned her Bachelor of Science from Georgia State University with a dual major in elementary and special education. She earned her master’s degree in early childhood education for the handicapped from the University of Texas in Dallas. Her career as a special education teacher included working at a residential school for autistic children in South Carolina, as well as a private facility for handicapped infants in Florida.

She and her husband moved to Texas in 1979, and Mrs. Still worked for the Dallas Independent School District as a special education teacher in early childhood for eight years, then eight years as a diagnostician. During her final two years with Dallas ISD she was an instructional specialist with the Alternative Certification Department, where she recruited, trained and mentored special education teachers.

In 1995, Mrs. Still opened her own consultant and tutoring business called Still Learning.

In 2005, she retired as a diagnostician from Copperas Cove ISD, where she worked to ensure students got the special education services they needed to be successful.

Mrs. Still is survived by her husband, Mike Still of Kempner; her son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Penny Still of Arlington, Va.; her mother of Jefferson, Ga.; brothers Rick Beem of Commerce, Ga. and Church Beem of Boston, Mass.; and sisters Jane Macey of Lakeland, Fla. and Martha Barva of Cumming, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Society.
