The location was different, but the problem was the same.
After struggling to clinch victories when in tiebreaker situations during their four weekend road matches, Lampasas opened its home court Tuesday and lost six of eight thirdset tiebreakers before falling to Cedar Park 10-7.
“That cost us the match,” Lampasas head tennis coach Kenneth Peiser said. “Not being able to close out a match we were ahead in [really hurts].
“Cedar Park is a very good team, and we competed very closely with them and had our chances. Next time we will capitalize.”
While the Badgers and Lady Badgers performed better than the coach expected, too many missed opportunities late in matches caused the team to fall to 2-3 on the young season.
During the team’s opening weekend set of matches, Lampasas lost a combined 14 of 24 third-set tiebreakers against Killeen Ellison, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights and Killeen.
In singles, top girls’ player Katie Shaw, Mackenzie Benton, Chris McWaters, Chris McGuire and Cheyenne Morrow each lost in three sets.
Chris Monroe broke the trend by winning his match in a tiebreaker, while second-ranked Alex Morua also won his match.
The Lady Badgers collected the team’s other pair of singles victories as Ashley Hause and Emily Bever each won.
“Both played very well and kept their opponents on the run and moving around,” Peiser said.
In doubles, all three of the girls’ pairings won. Shaw/Benton played at the number-one spot, followed by Bever/Hause and Nichole Queen/ Morrow.
The mixed tandem of Jeremy Cantu/Caitlyn Yates faced the Timberwolves’ top players and lost 8-2.
On the boys’ side, Monroe/Morua, Zach Holcomb/Alvin Aleman and McWaters/McGuire were all defeated.
Lampasas’ next match is Tuesday at home where it faces Killeen beginning at 4 p.m.
