Mr. Warren
Lloyd Chester Warren, 90, of Austin, passed away May 21, 2010. Funeral services were held May 26 in Mabry Chapel at Camp Mabry in Austin.
Graveside services with full military honors followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.
Mr. Warren was born Feb. 29, 1920, in Reno, Okla., son of the late Oscar Herbert and Nettie Elsie Slough Warren.
The family moved to Lampasas in 1927, and he graduated from Lampasas High School and also from Mrs. Jackson’s Business College.
Mr. Warren attended Tarleton College in Stephenville and graduated from the Army’s Command and General College.
He married Margaret Lucille Elder on Aug. 17, 1940.
Mr. Warren retired from the United States Army after 38 years and one day as a full colonel. He joined the Army on Feb. 1, 1942, and was stationed overseas for more than three years.
He was captured in North Africa on Feb. 14, 1943, and spent over 27 months in German prison camps, most of that in Camp Oflaglel in Szubin, Poland. Shortly before the war was over, the Russians took command of the camp. Mr. Warren escaped from the Russians at night.
The recipient of two Purple Hearts, Mr. Warren was reported to have saved the life of Amon Carter -- who became a Fort Worth newspaper publisher and philanthropist -- on one of the marches they were on after they were captured.
He was an active member of the Loyal Order of Ruptured Ducks, 1st Armored Division, numerous military organizations, Elks, Masons, Shriners and Ex-POWs, and was commander of the Tulsa Ex- POWs in 1979.
Mr. Warren later retired from Gulf Oil after 29 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years.
Preceding him in death was a son, Lloyd Charles Warren, in 2001.
