LMS’ January wins WTJCT title

Badger leads seven local golfers to top-five finishes by shooting two-day total of 157

The summer was a success for Blake January.

After winning three tournaments and earning an exemption into the West Texas Junior Champions Tour’s championship, January shot a twoday total of 157 at the Lone Cedar Country Club in Eastland to earn the 12-13 boys’ title by one stroke.

After an opening round of 79 Thursday, the Lampasas Middle School athlete shaved one stroke off his total on day two and narrowly held off Tanner Thompson of Albany, who recorded a second-round score of 75 to post a 158.

While January was the only Lampasas golfer to return from Eastland with a championship, six other local golfers placed in the top five of their age divisions.

The LMS Badgers -- who won the school’s first boys’ district title in 15 years last season -- produced a strong showing at the championship.

Led by January, the team finished the tournament with three players in the top five.

Talon Wright, who is expected to transfer to Lampasas and join the team for the upcoming season, placed fourth overall with a 169. Following a first-round score of 90, Wright rebounded to record a 79 in the second round.

Blake Graham finished five strokes behind Wright to place fifth with 174 (89, 85).

The LMS Lady Badgers also showed plenty of promise as they prepare to improve on their secondplace finish at the district tournament last season.

Lauren Beckwith and Morgan Rogers placed second and third, respectively, in the 12-14 girls’ division.

Beckwith -- who won a divisionhigh seven tournaments during the tour -- shot rounds of 93 and 95 to record a total score of 188, while Rogers finished with a score of 194 (95, 99).

On the high-school level, Lady Badger Carmen Gonzales had the best showing with a second-place finish.

The incoming junior and 2010 state qualifier fell four strokes shy of winning the 15-18 girls’ title after shooting a field low 79 Friday to finish with a total score of 165.

Lauren Davis was one stroke short of forcing a three-way tie for fourth place, but she finished sixth with a 184. Davis, who is entering her sophomore year at LHS, shot an 89 to start the tournament and followed with a second-round score of 95.

Teammate Brittany Graham opened with a 105 before returning on day two and trimming 15 strokes off her score to post a 195. Graham finished ninth overall.

On the boys’ side, Badger Byler Lindeman earned third place in the 14-15 age division with rounds of 86 and 83 (169), while sister Kinsley Lindeman shot a 137 (74, 63) to place 10th in the 6-8 coed group.
