Hornets have all-star success

Regardless of the final scores, three Hornets ended their careers on top.
Lometa seniors Cody Brister, Cody Burr and Charlie Wagner traveled to Lubbock last week to take part in the Texas Six-Man Coaches Association’s all-star activities.
After a week of team practices, public service and some down time, the three Hornets got into game mode for one last time.
Both Brister and Burr were members of the East in the Division I All-Star Football Game, while Wagner suited up for the East in the all-star basketball game.
Played at Lowery Field, the East dominated the first three quarters of the all-star football game, taking a 16-point advantage, 30-14, into the final period.
But the West all-stars would make things interesting over the course of the final 12 minutes.
With 6:35 remaining in the game, West quarterback Jacob Hancock (Valley) delivered a 10-yard touchdown pass to Fort Davis’ Mark Couble to put a dent in the East’s lead. Couble’s extra point attempt failed, however.
Just over three minutes later, Throckmorton’s Fred Foster intercepted an East pass and took it 40 yards for a touchdown. Couble’s extra point was good, and the West trailed by two points, 30-28, with 3:08 remaining in the game.
Needing only two snaps from scrimmage, the East quickly increased their cushion on a 17- yard scoring run by Richland Springs’ Haustin Burkhart. An unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt left the contest a onepossession game, and the West took full advantage.
The West tied the game at 36-36 with 1:38 left, but with 38 seconds remaining, Marcus Allen of Trinidad broke free for a 46-yard, victoryclinching touchdown.
Brister and Burr helped the Hornets to an 8-2 record during the 2009 regular season before Abbott eliminated them in the regional round of the playoffs.
Both players were recognized for their contributions by landing on the all-district list. Brister was named to the first-team offense as a running back, and Burr, a nose guard, was placed on the first-team defense.
Earlier this summer, Brister was named the Hornets’ offensive MVP, while Burr was given the outstanding lineman award at the team’s annual banquet.
Unfortunately, Wagner, who was a standout player on the Hornets’ football team, was unable to experience the same level of excitement in his final high-school competition.
The East suffered a 29-point loss, 91-62, to the West at the all-star basketball game, played at Lubbock Christian University.
Wagner was an all-around threat during his senior season with the Hornets, as he helped the team almost reach the top 10 in the state polls before San Perlita earned an overtime victory in the area round of the playoffs.
Wagner was named the team’s MVP and also was placed on the alldistrict first team.
