Mary Wieser honored for service to U.S. Army

Former Lampasas resident Mary V. Wieser was honored recently during a retirement ceremony at Fort Sam Houston Golf Club.

Ms. Wieser, the daughter of Sid and Jane Wieser, was recognized for her “long and distinguished career of service to the U.S. Army and its soldiers and families.”

She began as a Department of the Army civilian in 1974, when she accepted an assignment in the Republic of Korea.

There, she served as recreation center director until 1978 in Camp Page, Camp Colburn and Yongsan, Korea. Upon completion of her assignment in Korea, she continued her service as recreation center director from 1978-1980 at Fort Hood. At the Central Texas military base, she managed the largest recreation center on the largest installation in the U.S. Army.

In 1980, Ms. Wieser was selected as assistant director of Army Community Services at Fort Hood. She served in that capacity until 1982. She then was assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas, having been selected as the director of Army Community Services, where she remained until 1987.

Ms. Wieser later was selected for assignment to Headquarters, Fifth United States Army, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where she served from 1987-1992 as the Family Support program manager. She served continuously at Fifth United States Army (now U.S. Army North) for 23 years.

In 1992, she began an 18-year career as Executive Services Chief, where she culminated her career.

Ms. Wieser received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Southwestern University in 1972 and a bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2004.

She is active in national organizations and the local community. She is a member of the Fiesta Board of Commissioners, the Protocol and Diplomacy International Protocol Officers Association, the Society of Government Meeting Professionals, the San Antonio Conservation Society, the McNay Art Museum, the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Bel Meade Garden Club.

Her service awards and decorations include the Meritorious Civilian Service Award (second award), the Superior Civilian Service Award (third award), the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service (second award) and the Special Act/ Service Award (second award).

In addition, her honors include the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service (second award), the Louisiana Commendation Medal, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Outstanding Individual Program Manager Award and the National Association of the U.S. Army Award for Exceptional Service.
