Retired longtime Spanish teacher dies

Viva Mae Wright Viva Mae Wright Viva Mae Cox Wright, 99, died July 21, 2010, at Rollins Brook Community Hospital. Visitation is July 23 from 6-p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel.

Graveside services are July 24 at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.

Mrs. Wright was born June 4, 1911, at Victoria Community near Mart, to Oscar Wyatt and Buena Vista Coker Cox.

She attended school in Victoria Community, Prairie Hill and Coolidge, graduating from Mart High School.

Mrs. Wright graduated from Baylor University with a bachelor of arts in journalism and English. She received a master’s degree in Spanish from Baylor.

She taught school and coached basketball at Liberty Hill, Thorndale and Hewitt, moving to Lampasas to teach in 1937.

She married Robert A. Wright Jr. of Lampasas on Jan. 1, 1941.

During her husband’s career in the U.S. Army, they had a number of stateside assignments as well as tours in Germany, France and Japan.

They returned to Lampasas at his retirement from the military in 1957, and Mrs. Wright taught Spanish at Lampasas High School from 1957-1975, when she retired.

She was active in farming and ranching in the Mart area.

Mrs. Wright was a member of First Baptist Church; Eta Omicron Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma; Pierian Club; Lampasas County Retired Teachers; Retired Officers Wives Club at Fort Hood; and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 277.

In addition, she served on the Lampasas County Historical Commission and Lampasas Public Library Board. She was one of several who compiled the popular book, “Lampasas County Texas: Its History and Its People.”

Survivors include one son, re- tired Lt. Col. Robert A. Wright III and his wife, Carol of Lampasas; a granddaughter, Cindy Kemper and husband, Lyle, of Cypress; a grandson, Lt. Col. Robert A. Wright IV and wife, Myra, of Fort Hood; and four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Madalyn Wright of Fort Hood, and Jackson and Caroline Kemper of Cypress.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Robert A. Wright Jr; two brothers; and one sister.

Pallbearers are Larry Wilson, Mike Martin, Todd Briggs, Ruthie Martin, Jamie Briggs and Dick Parker.

Honorary pallbearers are the many students of Mrs. Wright’s through the years.

Memorials may be made to the Lampasas Public Library, First Baptist Church or to the charity of one’s choice.
