Mr. Miller
Herbert Franklin Miller Jr., 90, of Mesa, Ariz., died July 16, 2010.
Graveside services are July 26 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.
Mr. Miller was born Aug. 22, 1919, in Lometa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Miller Sr.
He married Flo Maddox in Gordon in June 1943.
In April 1993, he married Virginia Davis of Phoenix.
Mr. Miller served during World War II in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After 17 months in Europe, he received the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Belgian WWII Service Medal.
He was honorably discharged at the rank of field grade officer, major, U.S. Army.
Mr. Miller attended John Tarleton Agricultural College for two years, and later graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor of science in 1942 and a master of science in 1948, majoring in agricultural engineering.
During his professional career, he held positions as assistant professor at Texas A&M; as a United States Department of Agriculture engineer working on cotton mechanization projects; as a research director for the USDA in Beltsville, Md., where he was responsible for 24 research projects in 17 states; and as a product planning engineer with John Deere and Co. in Moline, Ill., where he designed combines and tractors.
Mr. Miller published numerous research reports and more than 30 articles on farm machinery and equipment.
He also served as national chairman of the American Society Agricultural Engineers Power and Machinery Division.
Survivors include his wife of Mesa; one daughter and her husband, Katherine and Lawrence Hynson of Stillwater, Okla.; four grandchildren, Jonathan Hynson of Houston, Janette Hilliard of Chattanooga, Tenn., Jennifer Jantzen of Tulsa, Okla., and Jason Hynson of Stillwater; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Miller of Abilene.
In addition to Sneed Funeral Chapel of Lampasas, arrangements were handled by Bueler Mortuary in Chandler, Ariz.
