Special Olympics

I am writing in reference to Mrs. Sanguinet’s letter in the July 6 issue of the paper (“Serving LISD specialneeds students”).

In 1985, when I was hired to teach the Life Skills class, I learned I would also have to coach Special Olympics. I had no idea what was involved, and never would have made it without Susie Dyer.

At that time, the state competition was held at the University of Texas campus in Austin and was weeklong event. The Lampasas team, made up of student and adult athletes, stayed in the dormitories at UT. Under Susie’s direction, we were able to have each athlete compete in various events and enjoy other activities. She made my two years of coaching much easier and enjoyable.

Susie Dyer is, indeed, a special lady.
