Blue Blazes approach regional qualifing meet

Weather prevented the Blue Blazes from showing up in full force at Saturday’s meet in Hearne.

Their results, however, did not suffer.

Due to concerns about inclement weather, Reahona Honaker was the lone competitor from Lampasas’ summer track program to attend the final meet before the two-day state-qualifying meet begins Friday.

Competing in the U-10 division, Honaker earned two first-place medals by winning the 400-meter run and the 800.

A week prior in Waco, the Blue Blazes combined for a total of 19 first-, second- or third-place finishes, bringing their total to 55 top-three showings on the season.

Abby Martin (U-8) was responsible for four of the medals in Waco, placing first in the 800, second in the 200 and 1,600, and third in the 100. She also helped the girls’ 4x100 relay team to a silver medal.

In U-14 division, Kelli Carpenter, Mason Morris and Jenna Vann each finished in the top three of two events. Presli Peters won gold in the 100 hurdles.

On Friday, the Blue Blazes travel to Temple for the regional meet where they will attempt to qualify for the Games of Texas in Waco August 5-8.
