LHS falls short in final chance to qualify for state 7 on 7 tournament

Tournaments have not treated the Badgers’ 7 on 7 team well this summer.

Luckily, Lampasas has one final chance to turn things around.

In their first three tournaments, the Badgers posted a combined record of 0-8 and were outscored by a total of 144 points, 281-137.

The most recent defeats occurred over the weekend at Brownwood’s state-qualifying tournament, where Lampasas opened play by facing the host Lions who won by 30 points, 44-14.

Having already earned a slot in the Division II 7 on 7 State Championship at the Texas A&M University campus, Brownwood could not gain anything more than experience at the tournament.

Their next opponent, Abilene Wylie, was in the same situation and provided a similar outcome by beating Lampasas 41-27.

Because of the Lions’ and Bulldogs’ status, the Badgers still had an opportunity to advance to bracket play with a win against Levelland, but in the final game of pool play Lampasas fell one point shy of earning a victory, losing 13- 12.

The defeat ensured the Badgers would not reach the state 7 on 7 championships.

Despite their unimpressive record in tournaments, the Badgers will look to turn things around today when they complete their Hill Country Passing League season.

With last week’s games being used to determine seeding, the league concludes tonight with a four-team tournament to crown a league champion.

The Badgers face Llano in the first round at 5:30 p.m. at Marble Falls High School. Their second contest will be against either Burnet or the host Mustangs.

While Lampasas head coach Joey McQueen hopes his team can turn around its tournament record, regardless of tonight’s outcome he knows his players have learned from their summer 7 on 7 experiences.

“[It] has been good from the aspect that the kids are competing,” the coach said. “So, with our kids competing, we are getting something out of the league.”

Not only are the Badgers competing, but they are doing so against some stiff competition.

During their tournaments, four of the Badgers’ eight losses have come against teams that qualified for the two-day Division II state tournament which begins July 8.

In addition to Brownwood and Wylie, Lampasas lost to Wimberly and Whitney at the Gatesville statequalifying tournament in late May. Burnet -- which the Badgers play weekly in their passing league -- also has qualified for the state 7 on 7 tournament.

At the qualifying tournament for the Red Bull Game Breakers Finals, Lampasas lost to larger schools in Class 5A Austin High and Class 4A Hutto.
