Allowing canines to honor veterans
Why a dog at a Memorial Day event?
This was not a romp in the park; it was a Memorial Day honoring our veterans. This one dog is the mascot for the Veterans of Foreign Wars of his post and of the Patriotic Guards Riders. The dog has been to more than 300 funerals of our fallen veterans, has escorted veterans from airports to their hometowns, has sat in flag lines with his owner in the rain, cold and heat honoring these veterans. The dog has been invited to sit with the families under the tent, in churches and even in the III Corps building on Fort Hood.
He has been to a lot of memorial events all over Texas in parks and has never been discriminated against before this event in Kempner. Many service dogs also died in the wars who were not seeing eye dogs. His owner, being a veteran who fought for freedom, also should have the right to have his dog with him.
There is the matter of our national flag at the city cemetery that needs some attention. A flag flown at night needs a light, and when worn needs replacement.
Thank a veteran for your freedom. Thank a politician for taking your freedom from you.
