Art, music and refreshments attracted viewers to a celebration Thursday night of the recently completed “Postcard” mural.
Located on the west wall of the Ron Ischy Masonry building at Sixth and Western streets, the mural features historic Lampasas buildings and sites within the confines of the letters “L-A-M-P-A-S-A-S.”
The third public mural painted by Vision Lampasas! volunteers, Postcard joins the Boot Roundup mural on the south wall of Jerry Goodson Surveying Inc. and Generations, an East Second Street mural that shows the businesses that have occupied the building that now houses Lampasas Hardware and Contractor Supply.
Mural committee members include: front row from left, Amy McDaniel, Sue Ellen Bumpus and Marilyn Clary; back row, from left, Katherine Mezger, Dianna Hodges, TJ Mabrey and Donna Clark. Not pictured: Susan Cornwell and Kellie Hughes.
Funded by donations to VL!, Postcard took a volunteer group of about 20 approximately two months to complete, VL! president Dianna Hodges said.
“We certainly couldn’t have done the more than 900 hours of work without their help,” said Mrs. Hodges, who also thanked volunteers’ spouses and friends, Mayor Judy Hetherly, City Manager Michael Stoldt, the City Council, and city building and parks departments.
Business owners Johnny and Amanda Wade donated paint for the project, and Dan Yates of Lampasas Sign Company volunteered design work for the mural, Mrs. Hodges added.
About 11 months were spent planning the mural, which includes countryside scenes, Campbell Park, the Lampasas County Courthouse, the Sulphur Creek suspension bridge and several historic Lampasas buildings. Mural committee member TJ Mabrey said “Postcard” will preserve Lampassas’ history as the city grows.
“It’s time for us to stop and think about what we want to remember and celebrate about ourselves,” she said.
Volunteers who painted part of the mural include: Joe Abel, Mary Jane Baxter, Ray Bell, Libby Bluntzer, Marlene Corbin, Susan Detrick, Kay Gray-Fox, Ron Hall, Mary Juby, Nancy Kahlstrom and Marilyn Kinsey.
Other painters were Lea Patel, Michele Patel, Maxine Rikard, Jennifer Scribner, Jackie Stone, Maryann Severn, the Mike Veroneau family and Janet Walsh.
Bell, Postcard committee member Sue Ellen Bumpus said, came across the mural while visiting family in Lampasas as he was recovering from heart surgery.
Postcards based on the mural were sold at the recent celebration, along with posters of the mural. Proceeds benefit VL!
In addition, VL! volunteers noted that a 2011 boot calendar, featuring Western footwear from the boot mural that were not included in the first calendar, will be on sale during Spring Ho.
Scheduled for completion soon is the fourth downtown mural, titled “Water is Life.” The artwork will be located by the addition to the Lampasas County Office Building on Pecan Street and will feature a map of the Sulphur Creek watershed with important geographic and cultural sites along the waterway.
