Lampasas well represented at Victory Bowl

For three Lampasas graduates, this is their shot at redemption.

The Badgers 2009 football season ended in disappointment back in November, when Austin McCallum trounced Lampasas by 30 points, 58-28, in the team’s first playoff appearance in nine years.

The defeat marked a bitter end for the Class of 2010’s high school football careers.

Brandon Abbott, Rush Seaver and Chelsea Ragland, however, have earned one last opportunity to go out on top.

The trio, along with Badgers head football coach Joey McQueen, will be part of the Blue Team at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Super CenTex Victory Bowl.

“This is a fun game, and it is a quality game,” McQueen said. “There is a lot of talent.

“This is my third all-star game to be a part of, so I’m hoping to go three for three.”

The Blue Team clashes with the opposing Red Team Saturday at the Waco ISD Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

Teams are composed of seniors nominated from more than 80 schools in the 12-county Heart of Texas FCA area. The players come from all different school classifications, ranging from Class 5A to six-man football programs.

While all seniors are eligible to play, McQueen feels the honor should be reserved for dedicated FCA members.

“I figure this is an FCA event, and I want you to be strong with God. These kids came to a majority of [the local FCA meetings], and I was excited about that,” McQueen said.

In addition to being committed to FCA, the Lampasas representatives excel in their respective roles.

Inside linebacker Seaver was named to the District 25-4A All- District First Team and is set to attend Angelo State University on a football scholarship.

Dual-position athlete Abbott will take his skills to Hardin-Simmons University after having a standout senior season. Abbott, who will play safety for the Blue Team, was placed on the district’s second team as a safety and received first-team recognition as a punter.

Ragland also will continue her career at the next level after making the Tarleton State University cheerleading squad.

Although the game is an all-star event, McQueen expects his athletes to produce on the field and the sidelines.

“I don’t want them to get up there and jack around; I want them to be serious about it,” McQueen said. “Let’s win this thing.

“Even though it has a Christian stamp put on it, those coaches want to win, and so those kids should, too. It is a sport [after all].”

While the game is the main attraction, the days leading up to the game are filled with clinics, team practices, entertainment, devotional time and community service in the Waco area.

One of the most exciting aspects of the game for McQueen is he gets to coach with good friend and Goldthwaite head football coach Gary Proffitt.

McQueen is assigned to defense, where he will coach the two outside linebackers, while Proffitt will be in charge of the Blue Team’s safeties, including Abbott.

“I’m hoping Coach Proffitt doesn’t ruin him by the time he’s through,” the Badger coach joked.

Regardless of the outcome, McQueen hopes the outgoing graduates’ final high school football memories will be positive and long lasting.

“These kids have really worked, and that is what I’m proud of,” the coach said. “It is good stuff. They’re a very talented group.”
