Sulphur Creek Car Cruise on tap Saturday
Preparations begin early for Sulphur Creek Car Cruise, the annual get-together of car enthusiasts.
This year’s event, sponsored by the Lampasas County Chamber of Commerce -- the 24th cruise -- is Saturday at W.M. Brook Park. Many vehicles are expected from across the state.
The cruise began in 1987 as a promotional event and soon gained statewide recognition, with the number of participants and visitors growing each year.
At the outset, few similar events were staged in Texas. In the years since then, cruises have become fairly common.
Entries include everything from hot rods and classic autos to exotic mini-trucks, and antiques to motorcycles.
The cruise is a rally where people with a common interest hobby cars gather for the weekend and view each other’s vehicles.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., and includes a car cruise through town at 4 p.m. so local residents can get a glimpse of the vehicles as they cruise down Key Avenue. Barbecue will be served at 5 p.m., and an awards ceremony is at 6 p.m.
In addition, there will be door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, dash plaques, activities, games and more. T-shirts will go to entrants.
Because of the space required for the event, W.M. Brook Park is closed to traffic for the day.
Visitors, however, are encouraged to stop by the park to view the classic cars. Owners, who enjoy talking about their vehicles, also appreciate visitors’ questions and photos.
