LPD now enforcing child safety seat laws
Lampasas Police Department officials are notifying the public that they will begin issuing tickets for those who disregard a law that went into effect Sept. 1.
Up until June 1, LPD personnel let drivers off with a warning, but now, citations will be issued for any driver who doesn’t follow the newest child passenger safety seat requirements.
Any child younger than 8 or less than 4 feet 9 inches tall must be in an appropriate child safety restraint system -- car seat, booster seat or safety vest -- no matter where they sit in a passenger vehicle.
Previously, the law required safety seats be used for those under 5 years old and less than 36 inches tall.
“We will be enforcing the law,” said LPD Sgt. Churck Montgomery. “These laws are for the safety of the children.”
Failure to follow the law could result in a ticket for a Class C misdemeanor and a fine up to $250.
