Pickups collide near Kempner

Two pickup trucks collided late Tuesday afternoon near Kempner when their vehicles hydroplaned, apparently on the same stretch of road just moments apart. The crash occurred at 4:55 p.m.

Trooper IV Monte Carroll of the Texas Highway Patrol in Lampasas gave the following account.

A 2003 Dodge pickup driven by Paula Bode of Burnet County was northbound on FM 2313 about a mile north of Kempner. A 2008 Chevrolet pickup driven by Larry Spann of Kempner also was northbound, behind the Dodge.

Rain was falling, and water had collected on the roadway.

The Dodge hydroplaned, rotated counterclockwise and crossed the southbound traffic lane and shoulder into a bar ditch. The vehicle came to rest facing south after its right side scraped trees along a fence line, damaging the Dodge.

Spann saw the vehicle in front hydroplane, but “he got caught up in his own hydroplane mess,” Carroll said.

The Chevrolet apparently hit the same water spot in the road, and the second pickup also rotated counterclockwise. Like the vehicle in front, it spun around, crossed the southbound lane and shoulder, and ended up in the bar ditch.

The back right bumper of the Chevrolet pickup collided with the front left of the Dodge pickup, as the Chevrolet also came to rest facing south -- and in front of the Dodge.

Both vehicles sustained minor damage. Spann drove his Chevrolet from the scene, but the Dodge driven by Ms. Bode had to be towed away.

Ms. Bode was the sole occupant of her vehicle, as was Spann in his. Both drivers were wearing safety belts.

While Spann did not complain of any injuries, Ms. Bode indicated she was sore from her safety belt. She did not require transport by emergency medical officials, however.

Assisting Carroll at the accident site were Capital Ambulance, Kempner Volunteer Fire Department and the Lampasas County Sheriff’s Department.
