District golf tournament interrupted by storms
Some say good things come to those who wait.
The Badgers golf team hopes the saying is true.
After tussling with Lake Travis through eight holes Monday afternoon, the Lampasas Middle School boys golf team, and the rest of the field, was forced off the course at the district tournament when severe weather swept through the Marble Falls area.
The disruption left the tournament outcome in doubt with the Badgers sitting in first place, five strokes ahead of Lake Travis.
But after much discussion, all of the schools decided to return to Hidden Falls Golf Course Monday at 4 p.m. to conclude the unfinished holes.
“[Lake Travis] needs to make birdies and our guys need to make bogeys to force a tie,” Badgers’ head coach Michael Molinar said of the standings. “As long as we stay in bounds, we should be OK.”
Blake January was one of the few players to finish the round, shooting a 41. Teammates Blake Graham, Logan Irvin and Bo Holloman need to shoot par on the final hole to post scores of 39, 41 and 45, respectively.
Graham and Irvin will play the course’s first hole, a par 4 with a slight dog-leg to the left, while Holloman finishes on the second hole, a par 5.
Dylan Singleton must play two holes to complete his round, but his score is not low enough to count toward the team total.
Should the Badgers hold on, it would be the first boys’ district title since 1995.
According to Molinar, the outlook appears promising.
“Lake Travis has a player who needs par for a 36, but he’s getting little help from his teammates,” the coach said.
Although the outcome will not be official until Monday, Molinar believes the tournament was virtually decided on the green of the ninth hole.
Following Graham’s birdie putt, a Cavalier matched the score with a 15-foot putt.
Irvin then responded with a 15- foot putt for par before January shot par by putting into a stiff wind. Moments later, play was stopped by officials.
“I don’t know how fast [the wind was blowing], but it was strong and the other two players in January’s group three-putted,” Molinar said.
The girls’ district tournament was also interrupted by rain showers, leaving several of the Lady Badgers with two or three holes left to complete Monday.
Unfortunately, unlike the Badgers, they are not on pace to pick up a district championship as Lauren Beckwith leads the team with a score of 38 and one hole left to play. All of her teammates have scores of 50 or higher.
