International Museum Day to be celebrated by library, museum

The Lampasas Public Library, under the direction of Shanda Subia, is partnering with Keystone Square Museum to celebrate International Museum Day today.
The event will focus on Lampasas’ oral history, and will begin with a reception at the museum, 303 S. Western, at 4 p.m. An oral history presentation will follow at the library, 201 S. Main St.
Collaborators are hoping to educate the public about oral history and to inspire more interest in the museum’s oral history project.
The museum began the project in October with assistance from Dealey Campbell of the Dallas Historical Society. On Oct. 30 and Oct. 31, more than 30 Lampasas residents told their stories to volunteer interviewers who videotaped them for the museum and library collections.
At tonight’s event, those who were interviewed will receive a complimentary copy of their taped interview.
Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited.
At 6 p.m., Elinor A. Maze’, senior editor and professional oral historian at Baylor University Institute for Oral History, will be featured. She will give a general presentation on oral history to the public.
Ms. Maze’ joined Baylor University in 2001. She oversees the editorial work of staff and graduate assistants, stages workshops and directs projects to enhance public access to oral memoirs through digital technology. There is no fee to attend.
The museum continues to collect oral histories in the community. Most recently, the Rev. Ben Bohmfalk, longtime minister for First United Methodist Church in Lampasas, who died in April at 103, was interviewed.
Donations toward the project are welcomed and may be mailed to the museum.
International Museum Day was instituted in 1977. Since then, museums all over the world continue to celebrate the day.
