Lions Club honors students, teachers at banquet

The Lometa Lions Club has a longstanding commitment to its community, and that was exemplified at the recent Lions Club Scholastic Achievement Banquet.

The event at the Lometa High School cafetorium marked the 27th year local Lions have gathered to honor high school students who have maintained an overall gradepoint average of 90 or above.

Following a chicken-fried steak dinner, Lometa Lion Dave Hamilton honored one of the organization’s own with the 2010 Lion of the Year Award.

This year’s recipient was Mark Eltgroth. He was lauded for service to the club and ongoing support of the community.

Lometa businessman Stephen Stone was the keynote speaker. His presentation was followed by awards.

Freshman honorees included Taylor Mitchell, Samantha Phillips, Esmeralda Jaso, Whitney Lamb, Kolby Hesbrook, Daniel Banda, Monica Bridges, Jesus Griffith, Skyla Thompson and George Torres.

Two sophomores were recognized: Katlyn Delp and Marissa Nichols.

Juniors recognized were Kylie Bradley, Devanie Burnett, Florencia Acevedo, Marcella Garcia, Martin Jaso, Colt Maldonado, Mary Alice Rangel, Josepha Romero and Cassidy Wienecke.

Seniors earning awards were Cody Brister, Curtis Crain, Lyndsay Delp, Colt D’Spain, Josh Logsdon, Juan Moreno, Agustin Perez, Maribel Reyes, Sonia Sims and Jasmin Vandergriff.

Service plaques went to Val Cash, 25 years; David Fisher and Kathy Logsdon, 10 years; and Rob Moore, Heather Moore, Michael Martin, Monica Vasquez and Cheri Wienecke, five years.
