Students honored for DRT essays

Seventh-graders who placed in the Texas History Essay Contest, sponsored by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, were guests at the May 2 meeting of the Oran Milo Roberts Chapter, DRT.
Winners were Analise Watson, first place; Sarah Porter, second place; and Steffin McCarter, third place.
Education committee chairman June Davis presented monetary awards and framed certificates to the winners. James Best, Texas history teacher, was also on hand.
Other guests included Mrs. Best, Sarah Porter’s mother and Analise’s mother and grandparents.
Mrs. Davis, chaplain, gave the invocation after Diane Davis, president, called the meeting to order and welcomed 17 members and the guests.
Donna Williams led the pledge to the U.S. flag, and Judy Smith led the pledge to the Texas flag. Diane Davis read the monthly fun flag fact which honored the Texas flag of San Felipe.
Following the program, Susan Browder, Wilda Mullins and June Davis served refreshments.
The club president reconvened the meeting to conduct business, and called for officer and committee reports.
Molly Miller, registrar, presented for members to sign and approve a list of prospective members interested in completing their membership papers.
Mrs. Smith, treasurer, reminded members to be ready to pay dues during the summer after the state convention.
Next meeting is Oct. 4 at the home of Wilma and Paul Culp. Their granddaughter, Sarah Floerke, will give a program on Texas politics.
