The Badgers and Lady Badgers deserve to be there.

Over the course of the 2010 track and field season, the 10 local regional qualifiers combined to win 48 gold, silver and bronze medals.

The number could grow to as high as 62 after the Region IV-4A meet in San Antonio. The two-day competition begins Monday at Alamo Stadium with the top two finishers in each event advancing to the Track and Field State Championships in Austin May 14- 15.

Highlighting Lampasas’ field of regional qualifiers are seniors Aaron Reyna and Brode DuBose.

Between the two District 25-4A champions, the athletes hold 18 first-place finishes this season and both have a good shot at advancing to state based on last season’s results.

PHOTOS BY RICHARD AKRIDGE Reyna will compete in three events with his strongest being the 110-meter hurdles. After winning five consecutive meets, the speedster finished third at district, but bounced back to post a personal-best time of 14.53 at the regional qualifiers meet in Brownwood. Times of 14.56 and 14.80 advanced to state in 2009.

Additionally, Reyna is scheduled to run the 300 hurdles and take part in the long jump events.

Barring an unforeseen breakdown, DuBose should easily advance to Austin, according to the winning discus throws from a year ago. The 2009 regional champion recorded a throw of 159-3, a distance DuBose has topped six times this season, with his best showing coming at the Texas Relays (170-9).

Pole vaulter Marcus Kehoe cleared 13-6 in two consecutive meets to finish the season. The top three finishers last year shared a height of 13-6.

Brode DuBose, above, will attempt to reach state in the discus Monday afternoon, while Lady Badger Andrea White, below, looks to advance in two events: the discus and the shot put. Also in the pole vault will be sophomore Zach Adams, a thirdplace finisher at district with a season-best height of 12-0.

Like Reyna, Adams earned the right to compete in multiple events. In addition to serving as an alternate in the 110 hurdles, Adams qualified for the high jump by placing second at district in the event.

Teammate Secody Howard claimed the district crown with a leap of 5-10, but did not place at the regional qualifiers meet with a height of 5-8.

Andrea White has the distinction of being the only Lady Badger to qualify for two events. The senior will compete in the shot put and discus.

Classmate Lauren Barlow is an alternate in the discus.

Returning for a second consecutive time, Amber Castle is Lampasas’ third pole vaulter to reach regionals and is entering the meet fresh off a personal-best vault of 9-0 at the regional qualifiers meet.

The most surprising qualifiers are sophomores Amy Martinez and Tealey Farquhar. Martinez posted a time of 12:40.94 to place third at district in the 3,200, while Farquhar -- in her only appearance with the varsity team -- won bronze in the 100 hurdles at district with a time of 16.68. Karalyn Capps is an alternate in the event.

Ashley Moore rounds out Lampasas’ squad after being promoted from an alternate spot in the 400.
