Two Hornets advance to regional contest
At the home of the Wildcats, a pair of Hornets hope to break through to state.
With top-two performances at the Region II-1A meet, Curtis Crain and Junior Castruita will advance to the Track and Field State Championships in Austin in mid-May.
But getting there will be difficult as the talent pool will be deep at the two-day regional meet beginning Monday at Elmer Gray Stadium on the Abilene Christian University campus.
Castruita receives Lometa’s first opportunity to advance, as he begins the discus at 1 p.m. Monday.
Crain will run two hours later in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles. Depending on the outcome, he could return for the finals.
Each athlete enters the meet as a fourth-place area finisher.
“It will be tough for both to advance,” Lometa head coach Wendell Bradley said. “Both will need personal bests.”
During the season, Crain’s top time in the 110 hurdles was 16.7, while Castruita’s top throw measured 124-0.
