Pierians organize bridge fund-raiser

The GFWC/TFWC Pierian Club met recently at the home of Cherie Leavell with co-hostesses Karen Cambon and Amy Davis.

After a welcome from president Susan Browder, Carole Marwitz introduced the speaker, Patrol Sgt. Charles Montgomery of the Lampasas Police Department.

Montgomery and his wife, Kristen, are the parents of a daughter. He joined the department in 2002 after working two years with the Lampasas County Sheriff’s Department as a reserve patrol deputy.

Montgomery was then hired as a patrolman for the LPD, and has worked as a canine handler and field training officer before reaching his position of patrol sergeant.

Montgomery’s personal message is “Goals worth having are worth working for.”

He presented the program, “Safety doesn’t happen by accident,” and shared advice on how to trust one’s intuition. “If something doesn’t feel right or look right, don’t hesitate to contact police,” he said.

Montgomery noted the many ways to avoid becoming a victim, from presenting a confident attitude to traveling with friends.

He also told members they should not be afraid to defend themselves should they be attacked, and he described different methods for self-defense.

In the business portion of the meeting, members discussed the recent Capital District Spring meeting and noted the Pierian Club garnered several awards.

Pierians were awarded first place in Public Affairs/ Citizenship in Action for its program on the Boys and Girls Club. The Women’s Health Program won first place for its Focus on Health.

Other awards included second places for yearbook and the annual Christmas concert in the arts category.

The Pierian Club is organizing a bridge fundraiser Saturday at 1 p.m. at My Girls. Tickets are $10 each, and light refreshments will be served.

Officers for the 2010-2012 term were installed by Bennie Bulloch. They include Ruth Martin, president; Jane McMillin, first vice president; Jane Westerfield, second vice president; Cindy Abel, recording secretary; Carol Wright, corresponding secretary; and Lucy Walker, treasurer.

The May meeting will be at the home of Karen Cambon with members and guests enjoying a Texas picnic. Co-hostesses will be Myrna Bozarth and Mrs. Martin.
