Longtime Red Cross worker dies
Valla Hetherly Valla Jean Freeman Hetherly, 91, of Lampasas died April 26, 2010, in Lampasas.
A memorial service is May 1 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Hetherly was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Medina, the daughter of Audie and Lonnie Freeman.
She grew up in Ozona, where she met and married C.W. “Fats” Hetherly in 1935. They traveled by train to Lampasas, where they lived and reared their family.
Mrs. Hetherly was a seamstress, working for Ann’s Ladies Shop and Chastain-Miller. She also made dresses for special events such as weddings and proms.
Mrs. Hetherly later opened City Florist.
She was a secretary for more than 30 years for the Lampasas chapter of the American Red Cross, and was manager of the Lampasas County Welfare Office and United Way.
Mrs. Hetherly was a member of the Lampasas Garden Club and Lampasas Art Gallery.
She designed the altar flowers for St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for many years.
Survivors include two sons, C.W. Hetherly Jr. and wife Wanda of Austin, and Clyde G. Hetherly of Lampasas; a daughter, Judy Hetherly of Lampasas; a grandson and his wife, Mike and Natalie Hetherly of Austin; a granddaughter in-law, Paula Hetherly of Austin; a granddaughter and her husband, Heather and Joe Lynch of Cincinnati, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Kristen, Jacob, Blake, Brandon, Andrew, Joseph and Angela; six nieces; and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Fletcher and Lyn L. Freeman; a grandson, William Mark Hetherly; and a nephew.
