Heavy rains delayed the regional qualifiers meet in Brownwood last Thursday for almost two hours, but once the weather cleared, the Badgers and Lady Badgers combined to set three personal bests and earn a gold and two silver medals.
Two of the three personal milestones were reached by the team’s pole vaulters. For the Badgers, Zach Adams cleared 12-0 to place sixth against the region’s best, while Lady Badger Amber Castle finished fourth after a vault of 9-0.
District 25-4A pole vault champion Marcus Kehoe placed fourth in Brownwood with a height of 13-6.
Amber Castle finished fourth at the regional qualifiers meet after setting a new personal best of 9-0 in the pole vault. Senior Brode DuBose earned Lampasas’ lone top finish by delivering a discus throw of 156- 10.
“I think that if Brode will relax and do what he is capable of doing, he has a good shot at advancing [to state],” Badgers head coach Jimmy Randolph said. “I am really excited about the upcoming regional meet.
“I look for our kids to give their best efforts of the season at the time that they need to.”
The Region IV-4A meet is set for May 3-4 at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
While Randolph believes the Lampasas program’s athletes will peak at the right time, it will be difficult for Aaron Reyna to improve on his new personal best time in the 110-meter hurdles. The senior placed second in the event with a time of 14.53.
“Aaron has a shot [at advancing] in the 110 hurdles if he will run a race like he did,” Randolph said.
In addition to the 110 hurdles, Reyna will compete in the 300 hurdles and the long jump at San Antonio. At Brownwood, the Badger finished fifth in the 300 hurdles (40.51) and fourth in the long jump (21-1).
Also bound for the Alamo City, district high jump champion Secody Howard cleared 5-8 but did not place, and Adams did not record a leap in the high jump.
Lady Badger Andrea White competed in two events and had the team’s top finish, placing second in the shot put. Additionally, the senior came in seventh in the discus.
Freshman Amy Martinez recorded a seventh-place finish in the 3,200, and sophomore Tealey Farquhar was 12th in the 100 hurdles.
As a team, the Lady Badgers finished 15th overall.
