Speaker shares information on birds with club members
Newly installed officers of the 36 Club include Susan Detrick, president; Gay Gorman, vice president; Margaret Oberender, recording secretary; Dorothy Duncan, corresponding secretary; June Davis, reporter; Ellen McFarland, parliamentarian; and Martha Green, yearbook chairman. Not pictured: Ann Johnson, historian; and Suzanne Tooley, treasurer. Local pharmacist Daniel Hodges was guest speaker for the GFWC/TFWC 36 Club meeting April 8 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church parish hall.
Hodges is a member of the Texas Ornithological Society, the American Birding Association and the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology.
He used handouts with pictures to discuss and describe common birds found locally. He keeps monthly sighting data for Lampasas, Bell and Coryell counties and has over 400 birds on his list.
Nineteen members and several guests were present for the meeting hosted by Maryann Severn, Marion Hammett and JoAnn Garner. Members introduced themselves and their guests.
Amy McDaniel, president, presided. Crystal Hammett, federation counselor, reported on the Capitol District Spring Convention in Hillsboro in March. She was installed as Capitol District second vice president. Both women are the first from Lampasas to hold district offices.
The club received nine awards for their reports, and Susan Detrick won awards for the needlework she entered.
Mrs. Detrick, projects chairman, distributed lists of acceptable snacks for the Boys & Girls Club, which members will donate at the next meeting.
The Texas Federated Women’s Clubs Annual Convention continues through today at the Omni Hotel in Corpus Christi.
Sue Ellen Bumpus, a muralist for Vision Lampasas!, described the latest mural in the process of preparation to paint on Ron Ischy’s building at Sixth and Western streets. She invited members to participate in the painting. The mural will look like an old-fashioned postcard with the letters spelling out Lampasas. Each letter will surround a picture of a local building. Actual painting is to begin soon.
Following the meeting, Mrs. McDaniel installed officers. They are Mrs. Detrick, president; Gay Gorman, vice president; Margaret Oberender, recording secretary; Dorothy Duncan, corresponding secretary; Suzanne Tooley, treasurer; Ellen McFarland, parliamentarian; Ann Johnson, historian; June Davis, reporter; Martha Green, yearbook chairman; and Mrs. McDaniel, federation counselor.
Mrs. McDaniel used chocolate candy to describe duties, and each officer was presented a candy bar to represent her office.
Next meeting will be May 13 at Alfredo’s Mexican Restaurant at 6 p.m. Reservations should be made to Mrs. Oberender by April 30. Tickets are $14 each, and dues of $35 also will be collected. Members may write one check for both items. Guests are welcome.
J.W. Hutcherson will present a program on the Boys & Girls Club of Lampasas, and members will donate snacks to be presented to the club.
