Methodist church pastor dies at 103
The Rev. Ben Bohmfalk The Rev. Benjamin H. Bohmfalk, 103, of Lampasas, longtime First United Methodist Church minister, died April 17, 2010 in Lampasas.
Graveside services are April 22 at Monthalia United Methodist Church Cemetery.
A memorial service will be April 23 at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lampasas.
The family will receive visitors at Mr. Bohmfalk’s residence on April 21 from 5-7 p.m.
He was born April 12, 1907, in Needville.
Ordained as a deacon in 1933 and as an elder in 1935, Mr. Bohmfalk was a member of the Southwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church, serving as an active minister for 44 years.
During seminary, he served churches in Pattison, Woodville and Denton in Texas, and Robinhood and Arrowsic in Maine.
After graduation, Mr. Bohmfalk served Texas churches in Lexington, Caldwell, Mason, Art, Bronte, Laurel Heights in San Antonio, Angelo Heights in San Angelo, Crystal City, Trinity in Corpus Christi, Granger, Ingleside, Rockport, Ozona and Lampasas.
During World War II, he served as a chaplain at Fort Smith, Ark., with the Sixth Armored Division, in Guadalcanal with the 21st Evacuation Hospital and at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston.
Finally, Mr. Bohmfalk was a chaplain on a transport ship that delivered military families to Europe and returned with war brides.
Following the war, he returned to serving local churches, and during the 1950s, he also taught Old and New Testament literature, first at San Angelo Junior College and later at Del Mar Junior College in Corpus Christi.
Even after retirement in 1977, he continued to serve churches as the need arose, including at Kempner and Lometa.
First United Methodist Church of Lampasas honored Mr. Bohmfalk as Pastor Emeritus in 1985.
In addition to his ministry, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, repairing clocks and reading.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara Kendall and Elizabeth Sterling, and husband, William; grandchildren, Alan Kendall and wife, Kathy, Rebecca Vineyard and husband, Mark, Adam Sterling and Benjamin Sterling and wife, Laura; and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Rubye Lindemann Bohmfalk.
