Pecan Field Day slated at San Saba

The San Saba County Pecan Growers will host the annual Pecan Field Day on May 3 at the Civic Center.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the program beginning at 9 a.m. There will be a $20 registration fee for those who call in and pre-register. The fee will be $25 at the door.

A catfish lunch will be provided by Betty Ann and Tommy Johnson.

A slate of speakers has been selected to offer presentations by the Pecan Committee. Scott Anderson, CEA Brown County, will cover laws and regulations; Bill Ree, Extension pecan entomologist, will provide pecan integrated pest management; and Dr. Larry Stein, Extension horticulturist, will discuss water requirements and pecan diseases.

In addition, John Begnaud, retired Tom Green County horticulturist, will cover general orchard management and fertilization, and Dr. Tommy Thompson, USDA pecan specialist, will discuss pecan varieties.

Several commercial exhibitors will be on hand to demonstrate the latest equipment and newest products, and participants may visit with and ask questions of field day sponsors.

Six Continuing Education Units will be offered to those with a private, commercial, or noncommercial applicator license.
