Lady Badger varsity golf places 10th at Burnet tournament
The Lady Badgers did not earn another championship, but they learned their could be a lot of gold in their future.
After winning the Kerrville Tivy tournament by shooting a 356, the Lampasas varsity girls golf team took a slide in the final standings by shooting a 363 at the Burnet tournament held at Delaware Springs Golf Course Tuesday.
While the score was only good enough for 10th place, it was low enough to have won the Class 3A division where the Lady Badgers will be relocating to next season. Leander Vandergrift won the Lady Badgers’ soon-to-be division with a 416.
In Lampasas’ current classification, Cedar Park shot a 316 to win the tournament. Lampasas, however, finished ahead of rivals Marble Falls and Hutto as the Lady Badgers’ top four golfers each broke 100 in the 17-team field described as “very tough” by LHS head coach Stuart Beckwith.
Coming off her championshipwinning round in Austin, Carmen Gonzales led the way for Lampasas with an 81. The sophomore’s score was eight strokes better than the Class 3A tournament winner who played for Liberty Hill -- a resident of Lampasas’ future District 25-3A.
Brittany Graham, who finished fifth overall in Kerrville, followed Gonzales with a 91 and freshman Lauren Davis shot a 94. Three strokes back, Juls Crook posted a score of 97.
Lampasas’ fifth golfer, Mackenzie Martin, did not produce points with her round of 105.
The Lady Badgers are scheduled to compete next in Llano on March 23 prior to heading south to San Antonio for a two-day tournament beginning March 26.
The March 29 meet in Fredericksburg marks the final action for Lampasas before district competition is permitted to begin April 5.
