LMS eighth-grader Jazdyk breaks school pole vault record; team finishes fourth
For the second time in three meets, an eighth-grade Badger has rewritten the Lampasas Middle School history books.
First, at the Pony Relays in Marble Falls, Avery Gary erased the school’s 18-year-old 200-meter dash record by crossing the finish line in 23:56.
In Burnet, it was Steven Jazdyk’s turn.
The eighth-grader wrestled the LMS pole vaulting record from the grasps of three former Badgers and claimed it as his own by clearing a height of 10-6 at the Bullpup Relays.
Surprisingly, the effort only earned Jazdyk a silver medal, as the host school’s Trenton Hafley matched the vault.
Jazdyk’s gold standard setting feat was just one of nine top-three performances for the Badgers, as Lampasas placed fourth overall at the meet with 102 points.
In addition to his silver medal in the pole vault, Jazdyk placed second in the long jump (16-7) and 110 hurdles (17.88), an event won by teammate Cutter Estep in 17.82.
Fellow record setter Gary had a first-place showing in the 200, winning the event in 23.82.
Paired together, the two made up half of Lampasas’ silver medal 4x100 relay team, and the school’s fourth-place 4x400 quartet.
Chism Carpenter and Marco Munoz joined Jazdyk and Gary to finish the 400 relay in 48.45, while Chase Birck paired with Gary, Munoz and Jazdyk in the 1,600 relay (4:00.47).
In other track events, Luke Moncus finished third in the 100 with a time of 12.28, and Estep (47.79) placed fifth in 300 hurdles.
Carpenter (1:00.32) and Lane Waller (12:43.95) both placed sixth in the 400 and 3,200, respectively.
Carpenter also showed his skills in the field events by winning a bronze medal in the high jump with a leap of 5-0.
Cody Jandreau used a 109-11 throw to take fifth in the discus, while Munoz was sixth in the triple jump with a 32-3 showing. Kameron Stevens rounded out the Badgers’ scoring with an 8-6 pole vault that tied him for fourth with Marble Falls’ Justin Torres.
The Mustangs won the meet with 202 points. Burnet (123 pts.) and Liberty Hill (115 pts.) edged out Lampasas to finish in the top three.
The Badgers seventh-graders earned a bunch of silver and bronze medals, but no golds as they finished fourth overall in Burnet.
Lampasas returned home with eight top-three showings and 16 point-producing performances.
Tyler Faries was involved in all three of the team’s silver medals, placing second in the 200 (26.06), long jump (16-2) and joining Scott Lewis, Brady Robinson and Blake Graham in the 4x100 relay (51.95).
Steffin McCarter picked up bronze medals by finishing just behind Faries in the 200 and long jump. McCarter was six inches shy of Faries’ leap and less than a second slower in the 200.
McCarter, however, was the top Badger in the high jump, placing third by clearing 4-6, and the 110 hurdles (20.54).
Lampasas’ other top-three outing came in the 4x400 relay, where Faries, Weston McIntire, Trent Holloman and Brady Robinson split the legs to post a time of 4:22.90.
Jake Dibble (discus, 87-3), Holloman (pole vault, 7-0), Robinson (shot put, 32-7) and the group of Collin Bowen, Graham, Holloman and Robinson (4x200, 1:57.47) all finished fourth in their events.
Lampasas is idle until March 26 when the teams travel to the Comanche meet.
On March 29, the Badgers begin hosting the two-day district meet at the Lampasas High School campus.
