Lady Badgers suffer 9-0 loss to Hendrickson in home finale, but not without celebrating seniors

But it will not be the kind most girls look forward to.

Six Lampasas senior varsity soccer players participated in the final home game of their high school careers Tuesday against Hendrickson.

While the emotions were high, the Lady Badgers’ performance was at an all-time low, according to Lampasas head coach Mark Guszak.

“It was probably our worst effort of the year next to the first Lake Travis game,” the coach said of his team’s 9-0 loss to the Lady Hawks. “We lacked hustle and that was troubling. Just a very flat performance.”

The shutout matched the team’s worst loss of the season back in early February against the Lady Cavaliers at home, and drops Lampasas to 3-10 in District 49-4A play.

Sam Thomas was one of six Lady Badger seniors to be honored during the team’s final home game of the season. While Guszak was disappointed in his squad’s showing, he was quick to give credit to an extremely talented Hendrickson team that is looking forward to surpassing its sectional round departure from last year’s state playoffs.

“Take your hat off to Hendrickson,” the coach said. “They are an excellent team that will once again make a deep run in the playoffs, like they always do.

“That being said, we go down there and play them a close game, and then we play them here and get blown out. You see the importance of Megan Mason to our team.”

In the sixth match of district competition, with a healthy Mason, Lampasas traveled to Pflugerville and fell to the Lady Hawks 3-0.

The sophomore midfielder/ forward was lost for the remainder of the season after breaking a toe during a scrimmage session prior to last Friday’s match against Hutto.

Mason -- the 2009 district newcomer of the year -- was also instrumental in helping the Lady Badgers reach the postseason a year ago.

Although there is no longer hope for a consecutive playoff appearance, Lampasas will still look to go out in style as it travels to Marble Falls for the season finale tonight at 7:45 p.m.

Win or lose, the match will be especially memorable to seniors Holly Chapman, Andrea Dibble, Liz Hawthorn, River Hooks, Jontell Ritz and Samantha Thomas.

“I will miss all my seniors,” Guszak said of the players who took part in a Senior Night ceremony at the match.

Three of the departing players landed on the all-district list last season.

Versatile all-around player turned goalkeeper Liz Hawthorn has three shutouts to her credit in 2010 after being named to the all-district second team last year. Midfielder Ritz and Dibble, a defender, were both honorable mentions in 2009.

“Ritz improved every single year as a player and [gives] maximum effort and energy every minute of the game,” Guszak said. “Dibble is a scrappy player that leaves it out on the field. Just a hard-nosed player that has always anchored our defense.

“Hawthorn is a dependable goalie that you could always count on to do what she needed to do. She will be hard to replace.”

The Lady Badgers scored just five goals in district this season as a team. But forward/midfielder Hooks always was a threat to score for Lampasas.

“She was the person we looked to for goals,” Guszak said.

While Hooks spearheaded the offense, Chapman and Thomas were two of the most multidimensional tools at the coach’s disposal.

“I plugged Thomas into every position this year,” the coach said. “[She’s] a free spirit that just enjoys playing soccer.

“[Chapman is a] hard, hard worker. Did whatever you asked her to do and did it well. Just a great character person as well.”

Although the team is losing multiple valuable pieces, the future is still bright.

The Lady Badgers’ future will also be much younger.

Lampasas lists just two juniors on its current roster while sporting seven underclassmen, giving the Lady Badgers plenty of potential to develop as they prepare to move into their new district next season.

In the meantime, Guszak hopes his girls will make tonight’s trip to Marble Falls a meaningful one, especially for the seniors.

The key word, however, is “hopes.”

“That is the plan,” the coach said. “To quote [poet Robert Burns], ‘The best laid plans of mice and men.’ ”
