Retired teachers tour LMS campus for Public Schools Week observance
The Lampasas County Retired Teachers Association had its Texas Public Schools Week meeting at Lampasas Middle School on March 2 in the staff dining room/ workroom, which had been created in what was originally the old band hall.
President Mary Casbeer welcomed everyone and conducted a short business meeting.
Sylvia Eddy gave the invocation, and Donna Guckian led the pledge to the U.S. flag.
Scholarship committee chairman Gail Callahan reminded members that money for scholarships was to come from interest on the accounts, and the scholarships approved by members at the February meeting would be more than the accumulated interest.
The discussion was tabled until the next meeting.
Kay Gray Fox asked members to complete their biographies for a new Keystone Square Museum project. She collected biographies from those ready to turn them in, and distributed outlines to members absent at the previous meeting.
Biographies will be kept in loose-leaf notebooks similar to those used for veterans’ biographies and on display at the museum. Any retired teacher or staff member in the county is invited to contribute to the collection.
Dwain Brock, LMS principal, related the story of the campus’ hectic move during the latter part of the summer. All moves depended on completion of the new high school building, and until then, very little could be done except walk-throughs and planning, he noted.
When middle school students were finally able to move into the former high school campus, Brock said he assembled a large group of LISD maintenance staff who painted rooms and made repairs in a relatively short period of time.
The building has a very different layout from the previous LMS campus, and Brock said he insists on his staff being a family and becoming familiar with all other staff members.
Though it is more difficult on a campus that is so spread out, Brock said he is pleased with progress.
After telling the group about the problems encountered and how they were solved, the principal led members on a brief walking tour of the building, beginning with the vast storage area behind the new kitchen, and on to the library, the outdoor memorial area, the old gym used for physical education classes, an outside play area for sixthgraders, and back to the cafeteria and staff dining room where six eighth-graders served the retirees lunch, complete with peach cobbler topped with ice cream.
Servers included Sadie Sappington, Emily Casey, Megan Maldonado, Makayla Martin, Bobby Nielson and Jerry McGehee.
Next meeting is April 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lampasas Independent School District Board Room. The program will be on mental and physical fitness for seniors, given by Linda Porter.
All retired school personnel are invited to attend and to join the organization. There are two meetings left prior to summer break and the end of the meeting year.
