Both retailers are housed in historic rock buildings on the square that feature the Lampasas County Courthouse, erected in 1883.
Rutland has copies of hand-written abstracts in his building that date to the 1860s, he said of Rutland’s that is housed in side-by-side buildings on the north side of the square.
The Briggs building, built around 1900, houses the ladies’ boutique and My Girls deli, which opened in 2001.
The Briggses and Rutlands come from a family of retailers, and there has been a Briggs in the retail business on Courtyard Square since 1900.
Jim Rutland’s father, Ken, was the JC Penneys manager at the company’s store in Lampasas from 1956-1966, when he purchased the clothing store, Cox & Shanks.
Jim’s mother worked in the store and did alterations, and Darlene’s mother, Thelma Herring, worked in the ladies’ department at the Lampasas JC Penneys store.
Both stores feature ladies fashion and accessories. My Girls offers sportswear lines from Flax, Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, Bleu Bayou and Ann Trinity in a variety of sizes.
Rutland’s offers missy casual fashions. Some of the lines include Desi Jeans, Graff and Koret. New offerings include Tribal and Nomadic Traders.
Rutland’s and My Girls will offer discounts and door prizes.
