Annual Needle Art, Quilt Show to kick off today
A collection of aprons by Suzanne Labry will be part of the two-day Needle Art & Quilt Show event. This year’s Lampasas Needle Art & Quilt Show “Stitches in Time” features an artistic lineup of contributors displaying everything from a collection of aprons to antique quilts.
The show is today and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Lampasas County Courthouse with some special events at Keystone Square Museum, 303 S. Western.
Admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for those under 12.
The event is the key fund-raiser for the museum, which will host a bake sale both shows days and a special exhibit, “Stitchin’ in the Kitchen,” a large apron collection of author Suzanne Labry.
Mrs. Labry has been collecting aprons since she was 5 years old. Showing her first apron to friends and relatives likely prompted them to give her aprons over the years, she said.
Mrs. Labry’s collection includes many different types of aprons -- cobbler aprons, holiday-themed aprons, fancy hostess aprons and more.
She is a freelance writer, blogger and quilt guild speaker, as well as author of “Texas Quilts, Texas Women.”
This year’s special exhibit at the courthouse is “Comfort and Creativity.” Historically, quilts have served two important functions. They were made for warmth, as covers for beds and to wrap around oneself when the weather grew cold, and they were an outlet for women to express themselves.
A wide range of quilt patterns and materials -- feed sacks, old clothing and any other available fabric -- attests to the creative aspect of quilting.
People’s Choice awards, demonstrations and vendors will be offered.
The show will feature a variety of artistry from area craftsmen displaying a large number of items that range from tatting to knitting and embroidery to doll-making. Crochet, painting, charcoal drawing, crewel, plastic canvas, rug-hooking, smocking, cross stitch, needlepoint, applique, fabric figures, beadwork, quilts and other forms of art will be on exhibit. A large number of family heirlooms also will be displayed.
A popular feature of the annual show is the raffles. Tickets -- at $1 each or six for $5 -- are on sale during the show at the courthouse. Three raffle items are offered: a quilt top made by Daphne Blanton and quilted by show chairman Susan Detrick; an afghan in the pattern “Wedding Wreaths,” donated by Mrs. Detrick; and a cross-stitch wallhanging that features blocks with cross-stitched roses, donated by Shirley Beyer. The embroidered squares were given by the Lometa Quilting Club. Drawings will take place Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Results will be available by phoning 556-2224.
