Gatesville might be home to the Hornets, but the Badgers and Lady Badgers ruled the land Friday.

The Lampasas varsity boys’ and girls’ track teams claimed a combined seven gold medals to finish first place and second place overall, respectively, at the Gatesville meet.

“I was very proud of our Badgers,” Lampasas boys’ head track coach Jimmy Randolph said. “The kids competed very hard in some adverse conditions. We had some kids really step up and set the bar a notch higher for themselves and this team.”

Despite windy and chilly conditions, seniors Brode BuBose and Andrea White had few problems hurling the discus, as both won the event. White also won the shot put with a throw of 36-6.25.

Reyna also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay with Brandon Scott, Tanner Swinford and Jeff Arevalo. The quartet placed first with a time of 3:41.20.

The Badgers posted 13 more topfive finishes en route to 121 total points. Lampasas beat second-place Whitney (107) by 14 points. Salado placed third with 99 points.

In addition to White’s pair of impressive throws, the Lady Badgers held their own on the track as well.

Junior Tiffany Fagg won the girls’ 3,200 with a time of 13:14.10. Freshman Amy Martinez finished a little over a second later (13:15.40) to earn the silver medal.

Lampasas freshman Amy Martinez placed second in both the 3,200- and 1,600- meter races. Martinez also took second in the 1,600 with a time of 6:06.50.

Although the Lady Badgers had a strong outing with 114 total points, the team finished well behind firstplace Salado (157).

Lampasas’ junior varsity teams also had solid showings.

The boys won first place overall, while the girls finished fourth despite competing with just six athletes.

Oscar Lopez won the 800 with a time of 2:21.46, and Stephen McKinney won the 110 hurdles in 18.18. The team of Joey Burks, Cody Corbin, John Cole Vann and Lopez took gold in the 4x400 relay by posting a time of 3:59.90.

In field events, Lampasas claimed three more gold medals.

Crofoot won the discus (107-8) and the high jump (5-4), while Julian DelaCruz leaped 17-8.5 in the long jump to earn gold.

The Badgers (135 pts.) edged out Salado by four points for first place.

Emily Demmell won the discus for the junior varsity Lady Badgers with a throw of 78-11.

Freshman Ann Ward also won her event, finishing the 200 in 30.40.
