Snowfall forces delays, closures

This white-tailed deer stopped long enough to survey its surroundings amid a dusting of snow during Tuesday’s coldweather spell that brought lots of white stuff and frigid temperatures to the Lone Star State. By early Wednesday morning, the sun peeked through the clouds, and most of the snow had melted. The weather forced numerous closures and delays for many schools, businesses and organizations. Related weather photos appear on several pages of today’s edition. PHOTO BY RICHARD AKRIDGE It was an unusual sight in Lampasas County early Tuesday as snow began to fall on buildings, cars and trees, leaving a blanket of white across much of the community. Luckily, wet roads discouraged the snow from sticking to streets and bridges, so travel wasn’t affected until Wednesday morning -- and just for a short time.

The weather forced a number of delays, closures and cancellations.

The Lampasas Independent School District closed at 1 p.m. Tuesday, and school opening was delayed two hours Wednesday morning.

Lometa School also closed early on Tuesday and had a late Wednesday start.

Fort Hood shut down when the snow began to fly, and all non-essential military personnel were sent home, and Killeen Municipal Airport canceled a number of its incoming and outbound flights as well.

There was only a five-degree difference between Tuesday’s high temperature of 36 degrees and the low temperature of 31, recorded in the early morning hours.

Less than a half-inch of precipitation was noted Tuesday.

Many Lampasans spent time out-of-doors building snowmen and having snowball fights -- unusual pastimes for Central Texas residents.

By Wednesday mid-morning, much of the snow had dissipated, and what ice was left on roads quickly melted when the sun made an appearance.

Lampasas Fire Department personnel noted no weather-related accidents Tuesday or Wednesday.

Kempner Volunteer Fire Department and Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office officials did respond to a one-vehicle accident Wednesday morning involving a pickup truck that skidded on ice. The driver had minor injuries when his car slid into a tree.
