Badger track wins at Marble Falls meet
The Badgers’ track season started with a bang.
Lampasas opened its season at the Marble Falls Daybreak Rotary Mustang Relays Saturday morning and finished the day with five individual first-place trophies and won the meet as a team.
With 93 points, the Badgers finished 20 points ahead of secondplace San Angelo Central. Rounding out the top five teams were Lago Vista (65 pts.), Marble Falls (44 pts.) and Fredericksburg (39 pts.).
Lampasas won gold in the 4x100- meter relay, 4x110-meter hurdle relay, team high jump, team pole vault and team discus.
Aaron Reyna, Brandon Scott, Justin Maldonado and Tanner Swinford teamed up to win the 4x100 with a time of 44.46. Rush Seaver, Zach Adams, Jeff Arevalo and BJ Alexander won the 4x110 hurdle in 69.55.
In the field events, Lampasas’ Zach Adams (5-8) and Secody Howard (5-4) won the team high jump, while Hunter Stephens, Adams and Marcus Kehoe each cleared 11 feet to take first in the team pole vault.
The Badgers also won the team discus event as Brode DuBose (160-1), Cody Crofoot (98-6) and Joey Burks (85-0) each posted impressive throws.
The team placed in the top three in six other events.
The Lady Badgers also competed at Marble Falls and finished in the top third of the field, placing fourth out of a dozen teams.
Lampasas captured first in the team discus and the shuttle hurdle relay. The team placed second in the team high jump.
Senior Lauren Barlow placed first individually with a throw of 96-11 to lead Lampasas to gold in the team discus competition.
Karalyn Capps, Julie Mize, Tatyanna Carnes and Genna Rogers won the shuttle hurdle relay with a combined time of 1:10.45.
The Badgers and Lady Badgers posted several other impressive performances, but the results were based on an unusual scoring system with every event being scored in a relay format. In field events, the top three entrants from a team determined the team score.
“The format was unlike any meet I have ever seen,” Lady Badgers head coach Trent Lancaster said. “It would be possible to win an event and not get a medal if your team didn’t reach the top three.”
Lampasas’ varsity teams return to action Friday in Gatesville.
