Longtime Bend farmer, rancher, conservationist dies
Foy Gibson Foy Gibson, 87, of Bend died Feb. 19, 2010, at Seton Hospital in Austin.
Graveside services were Feb. 22 at Sand Hill Cemetery at Bend with Layton Black officiating.
Mr. Gibson was born Aug. 16, 1922, in Bend, the son of Joshua Walker “Bunk” Gibson and Cora Etta Doyle Gibson.
He attended grammar school at Bend, and was known by his old friends as “Peter Rabbit.”
He met his wife, Clovis Lynn White, in Bend, and they were married Feb. 5, 1949, at Wallace Street Church of Christ in San Saba.
Mr. Gibson served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.
He was a third-generation farmer and rancher at Bend. He received a 150-year Family Heritage Award from the Texas Department of Agriculture in April 2008.
He was elected and served 20 years as a member of the Texas Wheat Producer’s Board and was past president of the organization. He traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Cuba promoting agriculture and research and development of Texas wheat.
In 2004, Mr. Gibson was voted Texas Wheat Man of the Year. He was featured in a 1997 Texas Monthly article about agricultural land and Colorado River water use.
Mr. Gibson was a member of the Riverside Landowner’s Coalition and served as a Silver-Haired Legislator for Texas, representing this area’s district.
He promoted agriculture, research and conservation. Mr. Gibson produced wheat, peanuts, corn, peas, cotton and hay on his family farm. He and his family were awarded the state runner-up for Resident Conservation Farmer Award from Region 5 in 2005.
He was awarded for Outstanding Meritorious Service to the Republican Party by the National Republican Congressional Committee from 1949-1999. He also received a 50th Anniversary of the House of Representatives Award.
Mr. Gibson was a member of the Lampasas County Appraisal District Board from 1991-1993, and he served on the area County Committee of the USDA’s Farmers Home Administration for San Saba County.
He was an honorary Chapter Farmer of the Vocational Agriculture FFA, and was recognized for exemplary leadership by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service through the Texas A&M University System.
Mr. Gibson spent time in Washington, D.C., and Austin promoting agricultural policies.
He owned and operated Gibson Brothers Farm Supply in Lometa for the last 50 years, and was a founding member of the Southside Church of Christ in Lometa.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years of Bend; two sons and their wives, Grady and Diana Gibson, and Glen “Handy” and Cathy Gibson, all of Bend; two daughters and their husbands, Clovia and Tommy Ketchum of Bend, and LaVada and Gregg McCoury of San Saba; a grandson, Josh McCoury; three granddaughters, Carol Gibson, Brenda Gibson, and Michelle McCoury and husband Jeremiah Lock; a great-granddaughter, Logan Lock; and Colt, Lauren, Chase and Merna.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Muriel Gibson, and a brother, Lester “Hap” Gibson.
Memorials may be made to Sand Hill Cemetery or Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch.
