Lometa council seeks technology grant
It was a night for positive visions for the Lometa City Council, as it considered a grant proposal that will bring much-needed technology resources to the locale.
Despite limitations of a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant that will bring high-speed Internet and conversion of the Santa Fe Depot into a community center and computer library, the Lometa Lions Club is joining the renovation efforts with 281 Communications to ensure the city of Lometa project moves forward.
Lions Club representative Dave Hamilton said with the combination of a $50,000 allotment from the USDA grant and a $22,000 electrical upgrade grant, the needed improvements are feasible for the dilapidated depot.
Hamilton also proposed adjustments to staff scheduling and payment considerations for the original plan.
“The more we can clarify in the grant, it will go a long way in eliminating multiple steps,” he said. “In my opinion, it looks pretty positive.”
After approving last month’s meeting minutes and ratifying bills, the council OK’d a minor amendment to the water development grant.
And, council members ordered an election for May 8, and approved 12-hour early voting days for April 28 and May 3. The 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. early voting days will be manned by City Secretary Michelle Schueneman.
Prior to adjourning, the council considered a maintenance issue at the Lometa Senior Center. A crumbling rock and mortar wall is allowing wind to blow into the building’s ceiling space. Officials said the city will continue to accept bids for wall reconstruction.
