Inmate serving time for murder in county involved

Donald Gower -- serving a life sentence for capital murder in Lampasas County for the July 2007 death of his wife, 31-year-old Hidi Gower -- was one of five inmates who attempted to escape from a highsecurity prison Friday night at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division at Livingston.

Three of the inmates who attempted escape were shot by officers, news reports stated, and they were released after treatment at a hospital. The other two were treated for lacerations from razor wire on one of the prison fences.

The five are accused of trying to escape after attending a Friday night church service.

The inmates are said to have scaled an interior fence and were trying to climb a perimeter fence when guards opened fire.

Charges of felony attempted escape are pending.
