Student Council assists CPS families

The Lampasas High School Student Council delivered some cheer to three area families during a recent volunteer project.

Student Council members purchased Christmas gifts, along with clothes, diapers and other age-appropriate supplies for two Child Protective Services "kinship" families and one family involved in the CPS Family-Based Safety Services program.

About 10 students assisted with the project. Upperclassmen shopped for the supplies, and a group of sophomores helped wrap the gift packages, first-year Student Council sponsor Elma Garnett said.

Mrs. Garnett, an LHS graduate, drew inspiration for the project from her four years of working for CPS. In her last year with CPS, she worked in the kinship program, which assists families who help rear the children of a relative.

The recent project was special for students, Mrs. Garnett said, because they actually shopped for the items families needed.

“A lot of them just love to give,” the sponsor said of Student Council members. “It’s fun to give something, but when you actually get to go shop for what they need and you know they will get it, it’s really great. They really loved it.”

Student Council members can suggest service projects for the group to organize, Mrs. Garnett said.

Along with the CPS project, the Student Council recently collected coats for the people of Afghanistan as part of an effort by the 89th Military Police Brigade. The brigade serves as a partner to Lampasas High School in a variety of activities.

Several Student Council freshmen are planning a cancer drive to raise funds for research, Mrs. Garnett added.

“I’m hoping we can do more for the community,” she said.
