Garden Club begins flower sales

The L-M Garden and Civic Club ended the 2009 year with a Christmas meeting in the home of Janie Potts. Hostesses were Kathryn Butler and Peggy Jones.

Eighteen members brought their favorite Christmas snack and enjoyed sampling a wide variety of recipes.

Following refreshments, Mrs. Butler gave a brief program in remembrance of the club’s 50th anniversary, on the ornaments members designed and made over the years for the club’s Christmas trees displayed in the Keystone Square Museum. She brought to memory three winning trees in the museum’s contests.

Susan Stone, president, conducted a brief business meeting followed by a gift exchange.

The first meeting of 2010 was hosted Jan. 18 by Val Cash and Joyce Hightower at the Garden Club building in Lometa.

Jason Byrd, Lampasas County Extension Agent, presented an informative and interesting talk and slide shows about trees.

First vice president Tico Hicks reported on the club’s continuing interest and efforts in planting trees around the Lometa community and regional park during the past half-century.

Mrs. Hicks announced that LCRA donated a tree in memory of her husband, Tommy, and the tree was planted at the club building during the annual Arbor Day Celebration on Monday.

The event included a musical presentation by Lometa students.

In other club news, Mrs. Stone announced that Sabrina McKenzie and Lewvon Hicks will co-chair the committee organizing the club’s annual sale of Valentine’s bouquets. Order forms were distributed to members and are due back by Feb. 8.

Members will assemble the bouquets on Feb. 11 for Feb. 12 delivery. Cost is $20 for a set of a dozen carnations, and $6 for bouquets of three carnations. Flowers can be ordered from any club member.

Group members also are raising funds through a quilt raffle. The full-size, multi-colored quilt is in the churn dasher pattern. The quilt top was donated by Loita Ramsey, and Betty Poe was asked to put the back on it and quilt it.

A drawing for the finished quilt will be held at the Lometa Diamondback Jubilee in March. Tickets are on sale for $1 each or six for $5 from any club member.

Next meeting is Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Linda Klose, retired teacher and avid plant enthusiast, will present a program on cactus.

Visitors and prospective members are invited.
