Hornets, girls win

By CLAY WHITTINGTON Staff Writer

Just like their record, the Hornets’ ranking continues to improve.

Lometa’s varsity boys’ basketball team climbed to No. 11 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ Class 1A DII rankings this week on the back of its nearly flawless 18-1 season.

More importantly, the Hornets extended their perfect district record-winning streak to eight games with a 63-44 win against Gustine Tuesday evening.

After scoring just 10 points in the opening period, Lometa exploded for 53 points over the final three quarters. The Hornets scored 31 points in the third quarter alone. Dalton Parsons posted the final 12 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter.

Felipe Nava and Charlie Wagner followed Parsons in the scoring column, adding 11 points apiece in the road win.

The Lady Hornets were also victorious Tuesday in Gustine.

Paced by four players who scored in double digits, Lometa won by a dozen points, 45-33.

Kylie Bradley (12 points), Maribel Reyes (12 points), Marissa Nichols (11 points) and Adriana Hernandez (10 points) combined to score all of the Lady Hornets' points in the victory.

The win comes on the heels of the girls' 13-point win over Iredell 35- 22. Reyes led the offense with 11 points.

Both the Hornets and Lady Hornets finish out their district schedules by playing four of their final six games on the road.

Following tonight’s home games versus Star, varsity teams will hit the road for four consecutive games before closing the regular season in Lometa against Iredell Feb. 9.
