Lady Badgers suffer worst loss of year, falling by 31 points at home against district foe Hendrickson

Guard Jennifer Herron gets hacked on her way to the basket, but no foul was called. In all, the Lady Badgers shot just 20 free throws compared to Hendrickson’s 32. Unfortunately, the Lady Badgers never had a chance.

The No. 15 Hendrickson Lady Hawks were in no mood to play around after suffering a 12-point loss to Killeen in their districtopener, and they took out their frustrations on Lampasas.

Over and over again.

The Lady Badgers never led against Hendrickson, falling behind by 12 points by the end of the first quarter before losing 70-39 on their home floor.

“We did not look like the same team that has played all year,” Lampasas head coach Stuart Beckwith said. “It is hard to say Hendrickson is not 30 points better than us because that was the outcome, but I think we will play a much better game next time.”

Lampasas (8-15, 0-2 District 25- 4A) cut the lead to 11 points, 20-9, early in the second quarter on Madison Morris’ layup from Kallen Vann, but could not get any closer as Hendrickson connected on 22 of its 45 field-goal attempts. The Lady Hawks also drained five of 11 3-pointers in the game with four coming in the second half.

Despite the tight defense, not much slowed down Hendrickson as they connected on 22 of 45 fieldgoal attempts. The Lady Badgers, on the other hand, were 13-of-44 from the field and hit just two of their 10 3-point attempts.

Lampasas also committed 27 turnovers in the game as the Lady Hawks finished with 17 steals.

“I told the team, ‘We need to forget about that one,’ ” Beckwith said. “[There was] nothing to look at, nothing to worry about. Just forget it.”

Makayla Valles guards Hendrickson starter Jazmin Griffin (14). Griffin finished with 13 points, including eight in the second half. The loss comes on the heels of a deflating 48-43 district-opening defeat against Hutto. The Lady Badgers led 38-36 with a little less than three minutes remaining, but the Lady Hippos scored eight consecutive points to take control.

The bright spots for Lampasas against Hendrickson occurred primarily on the defensive end of the floor.

Junior post Morris pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, seven in the first half, and blocked a shot, while Vann and senior Sarah Bishop each finished with a pair of steals.

In all, eight players ended the game with at least two rebounds.

But there was simply no stopping Hendrickson’s offense.

After the visitors leaped out to an 11-2 lead, Lady Badger guard Marisa Bogart found an open Kayla Prescott for a 3-pointer to trim the lead to six points.

The Lady Hawks (19-5, 1-1) quickly increased their cushion to double-digits, however, scoring six consecutive points. Hendrickson scored at least 16 points in every quarter, led by senior Jordyn Johnson’s game-high 21 points.

Two other players -- Jazmin Griffin and Kathryn Tolbert -- also reached double figures in points. Griffin finished with 13 points on four-of-eight shooting, while post Tolbert added 10 points.

Despite missing nine of her 12 field goals, Prescott was Lampasas’ top offensive performer with 11 points. Bishop, Barlow and Morris followed with nine, six and five points, respectively.

As a team, Lampasas recorded its best offensive performance in the second quarter when it hit four of 11 field goals for 12 points. Bishop scored four points in the period, and four others chipped in two points apiece.

The Lady Badgers, along with the rest of the district, are off tonight, but return to action Friday night when they travel to Lake Travis (9-13, 0-2) for their first road district game of the season. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

“They are a team we can beat [because] we match up good with them,” Beckwith said. “They will not be able to stop our inside out post and guard play.

“We are a much better team than what we showed [against Hendrickson], and we need to step up and prove it this Friday at Lake Travis.”

The freshman Lady Badgers picked up their first district win of the season thanks to some clutch shooting from Tori Liverman.

Trailing by one point with two seconds left on the clock against Hendrickson (11-8), Liverman calmly drained a pair of free throws to give Lampasas a 23-22 victory.

While Liverman hit the biggest shots of the game, Miranda Rodriguez chipped in the most points, scoring a team-high 10 points.

The victory improves the team’s record to 6-9 with a 1-1 district record.

Lampasas’ junior varsity team (8- 9, 1-1) was not as lucky. It fell to Hendrickson (10-8) by seven points, 39-32.

Both teams will join the varsity squad at Lake Travis Friday with the freshmen starting at 5:15 p.m. and the junior varsity tipping off at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Badgers return to Lampasas next Tuesday for games against Marble Falls.
