Dave Campbell’s “Texas Football” magazine predicted 2009 would “be a huge rebuilding season for the Hornets.”

Consider the reconstruction close to complete.

Lometa dominated the District 16-DI all-district awards with two individual awards, eight first-team offense selections and six firstteam defense members.

In all, the Hornets accounted for 14 of the 27 first-team slots with Dalton Parsons earning the defensive MVP and Charlie Wagner picking up the newcomer of the year honor as a senior.

“We’re real proud of those [awards],” Lometa head coach Wendell Bradley said.

Both Parsons and Wagner landed on the first-team offense as well. Parsons joined Cody Brister as the first-team running backs, while Wagner was the first-team spread back. Marco Hernandez earned first-team utility back.

“[Parsons] is just a football player. It doesn’t matter where you put him, he’s going to make an impact,” Bradley said. “We could play him at center and he’d be an all-state-caliber center.”

Parsons began the season as quarterback, but after breaking his arm, Wagner took over the position and flourished.

Both quarterbacks received plenty of help from their teammates, though.

Daniel Velez was named as the first-team center, while Felipe Nava and Colt Maldonado joined the squad as wide receivers.

“Velez really came on [during district play],” Bradley said. “He really did a good job for us.”

Ramiro Hernandez is the district’s first-team kicker.

Brister found himself on both first teams after being named as a cornerback on defense.

Joining him on the defensive first team were Colter Burr (NG), Juan Moreno (DL), Scott Hernandez (LB), Junior Castruita (S) and Manuel Hernandez (Utl.).

“Moreno did a real good job against teams that ran multiple offenses,” Bradley said. “So, it was an honor to see him [make the list].”

Of the remaining 13 first-team slots, district champion Calvert occupied 11 of them. The Trojans also claimed three individual honors with Jamarcus Ashley being named player of the year, Jamison Williams earning offensive MVP and Coylin Grimes taking coach of the year.

The only real downside for Lometa is 10 of the 14 selections are seniors who will not return next season.

“We have those guys who may not have been outstanding athletes in their younger years, but [as seniors] their bodies have matured and they are more dedicated,” Bradley said. “That gives us depth, and then we add in quite a few good athletes with our younger players.

“That lets us beat a lot of good [teams].” And gets a lot of district-wide attention as well.
