Church group to discuss book

The Come Thirsty Class at First United Methodist Church will begin a discussion on “The Shack: Where Tragedy Confronts Eternity,” by William P. Young.

Patrick Marsh will facilitate the discussion. Classes meet Sundays at 10 a.m. in room 8 of the Wesley Fellowship Center.

Mackenzie Allen Phillips’ youngest daughter, Missy, was abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness.

Four years later, in the midst of his “Great Sadness,” Mack receives a suspicious note, ostensibly from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend.

Against his better judgment, he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack’s world forever, and quite possibly the reader’s.

The author was born a Canadian and raised among a stone-age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of what was New Guinea. He suffered great loss as a child and young adult, and has overcome a host of inner demons to live a fulfilled life in his 50s.
