Lampasas earns second consecutive consolation championship at Poteet
PHOTO BY YVONNE BEATTY The Badgers show off their consolation championship trophy from the Poteet tournament. Lampasas went 2-1 during the event. Senior forward Eduardo Davila, No. 23, was named to the all-tournament team. For the second time in two weeks, the Badgers are consolation champions.
One week after earning the consolation championship at the Lorena tournament, Lampasas traveled to Poteet where it went 2-1 behind all-tournament team member Eduardo Davila.
The Badgers were their own worst enemy in the tournament opener against Geronimo Navarro, losing 48-38.
Navarro shot more than double the free throws Lampasas did as the Badgers struggled to adjust to the officiating, according to head coach Scott Harrelson.
The loss sent Lampasas into the consolation bracket where it ran into host team Poteet.
Guard Colton Perkins hit a pair of 3-pointers in the opening quarter, and the Badgers built an early 10-point lead.
Late turnovers and poor shot selection allowed Poteet to climb back into the contest, but Astin Murray connected on a trey and hit a couple free throws to help secure a 45-38 win.
One day later, the Badgers returned to the court to play San Antonio Southside for the consolation championship.
After playing a highly contested game, Southside lost its cool late as several players received technical fouls, and their coach was ejected following a pair of technical fouls with 12 seconds remaining on the clock. Lampasas won 61-50.
“I was very proud of how the boys bounced back after the weak showing in the first-round game,” Harrelson said. “This is a tournament we should have won had we been a bit more focused.”
LHS plays next at Llano Friday before traveling to Westwood Saturday for the final game until after the Christmas holiday.
